    Beskrivelse

Acute hamstring muscle injuries are the most prevalent muscle injury reported in sports including high-speed running,
such as football, with a very high recurrence rate (1 in 4 athletes have a recurrence). Research efforts over the past 10
years have been directed at optimising injury prevention and return to sport after hamstring injury, but a continued high
prevalence of hamstring injuries seem to exist. This has been suggested to indicate that traditional injury prevention and
rehabilitation following hamstring injury is not effective. However, as the intensity of many athletic events as well as the
athlete’s physical capacity have increased dramatically within the last decade, considerations on running intensity and
total hamstring loads seem relevant and need to be studied more carefully. While the potential benefits of eccentric
strength training has been recognised and proven in controlled studies to reduce the number of hamstring injuries, the
precise mechanisms by which eccentric hamstring strength training-exercise is effective are not fully understood, and
continues to be debated. Unfortunately, a lack of compliance with eccentric training in the prevention of hamstring
injuries has been recognised in some reported randomised trials and is suspected to be the main explanation for
obtaining inferior results in these studies. The question therefore also remains whether high-speed running athletes
today are performing eccentric training as intended, and if not - which barriers may be present in the athletic setting that
can make this intervention difficult to implement.
The 1st Copenhagen Hamstring Seminar will address these issues and provide the newest information on current
strategies in hamstring muscle injury prevention, including risk factors for injury, possible mechanisms of injury and
preventive effect, and information on the adoption of existing hamstring injury interventions in high-level athletes. At the
IOC Sports Medicine Copenhagen - Research Centre for Prevention of Injury and Protection of Athlete Health we are
proud to present a prominent line-up of researchers in this field, and with this seminar we hope to bring more attention
and knowledge around acute hamstring injuries for the benefit of physiotherapists and doctors working with high-speed
    running athletes.
