Beskrivelse

To provide healthcare professionals with practical strategies for managing athletes with hip dysplasia, focusing on applications in clinical practice.

Adult hip dysplasia is increasingly recognised as a condition affecting athletic performance and long-term joint health. This workshop seeks to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage this patient population effectively, as underscored in recent research, including the comprehensive review by O’Brien et al. (2025).

Hip dysplasia describes a morphological hip joint with insufficient acetabular coverage of the femoral head, commonly observed among young adults. The implication of hip dysplasia extends beyond discomfort, as those diagnosed with
hip dysplasia are at greater risk of hip-related pain and early-onset hip osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, the condition is frequently overlooked during clinical assessments, leading to delayed diagnoses that can result in adverse outcomes, such as longstanding pain, functional impairment and the need for surgical interventions.

Identifying hip dysplasia is challenging due to the variability in clinical presentation and a lack of consensus regarding diagnostic criteria, contrasting other hip-related conditions. This workshop will offer practical clinical assessment tools and management strategies, enabling participants to enhance their approach to treating athletes with hip dysplasia in their practice.
