I presented part of my research from my PHD.-thesis: “ – an investigation of constructions of masculinities and ethnicities in school life at a car mechanic training programme”. Theoretically, the dissertation is grounded in both gender and intersectionality studies as well as critical masculinity studies. The study is based on qualitative interviews with the boys and participant observations from the school setting. The point of empirical departure is to analyze homosocial relations among boys and between boys and teachers where a dynamic hierarchy of masculinities and ethnicities is both produced and negotiated. My presentation showed how humour works as a process of subjectification and that it becomes formative of masculinities, ethnicities and other locally composed categories. Through humour and laughter the boys establish and negotiate ambivalent positions for themselves and others with the effect of both inclusion and exclusion.
