Abstract Perspectives and dilemmas related to inclusion among adults with intellectual disabilities Kristine Buus Johansen ([email protected]) and Anthon Sand Jørgensen ([email protected]) - VIA University College The workshop will present a research study about disabled adults´s experiences of being included and excluded (Johansen & Jørgensen 2014). The background for this study is a research paper from 2011 which mentions how social workers experience disabled adults as excluded in the Danish society (Voksen handicapundersøgelsen Tema 2 2011). Similarly a study from 2012 shows how people with physical and mental disabilities in Denmark still live excluded in society and that their opportunities for participation are limited (Rosendahl Jensen 2012) The aim of the study introduced in the workshop was to examine the inclusion and exclusion processes experienced by disabled adults. The project's ambition was to identify disabled people perspectives according to their rights in the UN Disability Convention (CRPD 2006), and thereby focus on possible way to include people who traditionally have been victims of marginalization (Kirkebæk 2007). Methodologically the project was based on was nine semi structured qualitative interviews with disabled adults searching for their experiences with inclusion and exclusion. The study illustrated that participation in communities are often connected to specific disability communities isolated from society. Our data indicates that participation in communities, whether anchored in the general society or in disability communities is important. Several informants expressed desire to participate in social communities in regular workplaces and leisure activities, and the study showed only a few successful examples of this. The participant´s perspectives illustrate a dilemma; Disabled people´s participation in disability communities is valuable and provide important social experience. Nevertheless, at the same time, participation in such communities, can lead to a feeling of isolation from the general society. The study further indicates that the social worker’s perspectives are crucial for the inclusion processes of disabled adults.” References Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities http://www.un.org/disabilities/documents/convention/convoptprot-e.pdf Kirkebæk, B.
