How might we approach the "lived contradictions of everyday life," when it is persons (in a Gramscian sense) who do the everyday living of those contradictions and at the same time it is processes of historical division and struggle that make subjects and everyday lives in contradictory ways? A study of extended tensions over the meanings -- in practice -- of "education" and "applied social research" will provide a basis for exploring those complicated "how" questions.
