Overall, the analysed textbooks showed very limited opportunities to learn flexibility and adaptivity in multidigit arithmetic. The textbooks did not differ significantly with respect to this and we did not find any relationship between the use of specific textbooks and the students’ flexibility and adaptivity. However, there appears to be a difference in students’ results in the national test in mathematics depending on the textbooks used. Overall, our results are in line with international findings that textbooks in mathematics offer very limited learning opportunities regarding flexibility and adaptivity in arithmetic (Hickendorff & van Zanten, 2024). This places special demands on the teacher's ability to offer these learning opportunities in other ways and in a Danish context a relationship has been found with the teacher’s adaptivity (Andersen et al, 2024).
