Beskrivelse
Philosophical-existential conversations about sustainability and nature in religious education - participation opportunities and – dilemmasMy ongoing classroom research in the subject Kristendomskundskab (knowledge of Christianity) indicates that when religions and religious narratives are constructed in a philosophical-existential way, it opens participation opportunities for the students. When religion and religious texts are constructed as reflection on universal questions of life and existence, it creates opportunities for participation, attention, and responsiveness in the students.
Sustainability and the human relationship with nature can be included as part of a school's religious education programme and it is already mentioned in the Danish aim of the school (§ 1). The philosophical-existential construction of this theme opens new opportunities for participation among others linked to a discussion of a distant ethical claim (cf. K.E. Løgstrup (1905-1981)). It also implies several participatory dilemmas in the pedagogical practice related to meaning, hope, powerlessness, and the school's broad Bildung aim.
The presentation will begin by presenting some of the main findings of my ongoing PhD thesis ‘Participation opportunities in Kristendomskundskab’ - not least how the discourse of life-philosophical-existential religion can function as a participation-opener. The sociologist Basil Bernstein's (1924-2000) micro-sociological conceptual architecture is used as an analysis tool in this context. Then focus will be sustainability and nature as a topic in religious education - not least in relation to a distant ethical claim - and how this theme can be opened philosophical-existential. In connection to this, there will be a reflection on that participatory dilemmas such a pedagogical practice may contain
