Bringing Lesson Study into Dutch (Teacher) Education: A Collaborative ApproachHow can we make lesson study a part of teacher education? In the Netherlands, they are working on integrating lesson study into teacher training programs to enhance classroom learning and improve teaching quality. Today Tina Maria Brinks and I talked with Tom Coenen https://lnkd.in/d_HY2xVq on lesson study.
Lesson study is a structured approach where teachers collaboratively plan, observe, and analyze lessons to refine teaching practices. By focusing on specific topics. Together they set research goals, predict student responses, and analyze their learning processes through case studies. This iterative cycle provides valuable insights that help shape better teaching strategies.
Some key takeaways from their work so far:
✅ Predicting & observing: Designing lessons with a clear hypothesis and then gathering data on student reactions.
✅ Collaborative reflection: Teachers and researchers working together to refine classroom strategies.
✅ Rehearsing & coaching: Supporting teachers to develop confidence and competence through repeated cycles.
Lesson study is not just a tool—it’s a mindset shift in education and a partnership for learning. Inspired by international best practices, including insights from Japan they aim to spread this approach across Dutch schools and in teacher education.
Looking forward to following your interesting new research project on lesson study and student engagement with Cindy Poortman.
