Titel: In defense of studying fences: a tangible entry-point to understand shared divisions

Inspired by Pierre Lemonnier (2012), we set out to explore a mundane object – fences in various places in Northern Uganda. Some fences hinder transgression and visibility among those it separates, but at the same time, we will argue that fences and the creation of them render something intangible visible: social relations, tensions, and changing practices around land sharing and dividing. We are inspired by the idea that physical objects render tangible important aspects of social organization, culture, systems of thought, or actions that words alone could not do (ibid.: 14).
