This intense one-day PhD seminar seeks to advance understanding of & methodologies to explain new emerging theories and concepts in the nexus between development studies and sociology. The focus is related to the challenges which globalization raises in the context of transformation and social change in developing countries. The issues of economic and political strategies in the Third World are of importance in determining the possibilities and limits imposed by the world system. The theme comprises a rethinking of the actors and institutions in state-society relations generate new institutions, with a special focus on social welfare, social policy, and poverty. Fur¬thermore, the seminar emphasizes studies and problems related to the question of foreign aid, rural and urban development, social movements and gender in developing societies and how these themes relate to social distribution and social welfare. The approach of the seminar is that of sociology in a developmental context.
