The Potential Reverse of the Prophylactic Medal

These guest lectures argue the case that prophylactic prevention oriented at the promotion of so called healthy lifestyle is in principle an enterprise, which can potentially provoke an impoverishment of life and thus the very opposite of the intended. With examples from the philosophy and history of ideas of dietetics the lecture points to and reflects some of the fundamental epistemological, ethical, and aesthetical problems involved with the basic principle of prophylactic dietetics – i.e. the idea that anticipated health threats can be prevented through intervention in the way of living here and now.
