The Specter of Applied Science

Beskrivelse

In contemporary academia, we constantly talk about applied science and real-world problems. The key to social relevance is practical usefulness, which often appears in opposition to basic research, humanistic approaches, not to mention philosophy. This seminar aims to turn the tables by critically examining the very ideas and fantasies surrounding application-oriented thinking.

What fantasies shape this orientation? Does it, for example, operate with a spooky notion of pure, non-applied thought that must be combatted at all costs? How do such a specter and other similar fantasies inform actual thinking in an age of increasing demand for external funding and the related procedures of research applications? Must one suppress “symptoms” in the research processes, such as anomalies, inconsistencies, and doubt? The seminar creates space for broader analyses of application-oriented thinking. Today, a multitude of applications makes the world practically accessible, yet also confronts us with a fundamental question: Have we become entirely “appified”?

In short, by drawing on philosophy and psychoanalysis, the seminar aims to address what remains unthought in today’s landscape of application-oriented approaches – with its specters, desires and fantasies – and “appified” thought.
