To conclude on this case assignment, we have learned from our conversations, research and observations that Absalon could benefit from Lean Management.
We would suggest a focus on designing a layout behind the bar, which will help the workflow instead of obstructing it.
We recommend Absalon using a Kaizen-Event and thereby gaining valuable knowledge from their employees during this process.
There are a few simple fixes based on our observations and value stream analysis which could be applied to Folkehuset Absalon immediately. For example, we had a conversation with one of the owners about having larger milk jugs on
the bar counter, so the baristas did not have to refill them as often during the busy times. Her response was that this appears the milk to less fresh and that the nice-looking milk bottles added to the aesthetic of the bar. In addition, the bar staff could avoid asking customers for their names and calling them out; but employees at Absalon believed this would take away from the overall aesthetic and values of the organization. These conversations taught us that although we would like to make this organization as lean as possible, it ultimately isn’t possible to maintain the integrity of this pleasant business.
Another aspect which we would improve but seems more realistic is their hiring process. We think that this might open up to a lot of improvement, because Absalon at the moment doesn’t practice any sort of comprehensive training.
Through the improved on-boarding process Absalon can ensure that the employees are well informed about the systems and standards and hopefully will work more efficiently right away. We also suggest that as a part of a more diverse on-boarding process for the workers, they should include ISO 26000 basic training materials, in the form of a presentation and training protocol to help Absalon have a more sustainable approach and one day become a part of the UN global compact initiative too.
Overall, with these suggestions we believe Folkehuset Absalon would operate as a leaner organization and have the potential for an extreme growth over the next few years. It would be nice for their business to become more lucrative soon and hopefully with maximizing the potential of their employees, space, and materials, this can happen.
