Beskrivelse
Background
A collaborative research project involving the three countries of Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom commenced in September 2014. A pilot project was successfully completed which explored the impact of clinical international clinical exchanges for student nurses. The pilot study aimed to develop and test the methodological approach to inform the main study that commenced in September 2015. The pilot study findings suggest that an international clinical exchange has a significant impact on student nurses by enhancing communication and clinical skills and development of critical analysis skills through comparison of health care systems and nursing approaches. Furthermore students identified the international exchange developed their independence and organisational skills in both their personal and professional life which they perceived as lifelong skills. Pilot study findings were presented at the International Council of Nurses (ICN) conference in Seoul, Korea in June 2015.
The main project research question is:
What is the short term and long-term impact of international clinical exchange on student nurse personal and professional competencies?
The study adopts a mixed methods approach incorporating a pre and post elective questionnaire, post elective reflection and focus group data (Table 1). The study will collect data from September 2015 to August 2017. A subsequent follow up questionnaire at one-year post qualification will aim to capture the long-term impact on student career trajectory and personal and professional competencies.
