Abstract

Background: Considering the opportunities and challenges of Participatory Research (PR), this approach was assessed as valuable to improve the preparation of nursing students for their first clinical period. This preparation is important as nursing students feel inadequate during this period which may result in them dropping out. Therefore, this study aimed to develop educational activities to prepare first-year nursing students for clinical education using a sustainable PR study design.
Method: We used a longitudinal multi-method PR approach to design educational activities to support the preparation of nursing students for their first clinical period. The PR process was designed using group interviews, co-creative workshops, observations, and surveys over a period of 24 months. Nursing students from different semesters were involved and had various roles throughout the PR process.
Results: This study showed that involving nursing students in the development and implementation of educational activities resulted in students claiming ownership of the educational activity as well as taking responsibility for their own learning process. Furthermore, applying a longitudinal multi-method PR approach contributed to a continuous development of nursing education by involving students from different semesters in the various phases of the PR-process.
Discussion: The longitudinal multi-method PR approach seems to support sustainable implementation and change in nursing education. Longitudinal multi-method PR approaches’ many phases require time and resources; however, this study indicates that this approach may be a valuable investment as it seems to increase the possibility of reaching the desired goal.
