Abstract
Background
In Denmark, management of care at hospitals is characterized by efficient medical treatment and short hospital stay. This results in a heavier and more complex workload on the primary health care sector. However, very little research has so far shed light on the area of home care performed by nurses. The aim of the study was to examine the experience of home care from a nurse as well as a citizen perspective.
Methods
A population-based survey was performed in September 2016. All home care nurses in the municipality of Silkeborg assessed all their contacts during one week using a paper-registration form. The items of the form covered issues such as supplementary problems raised, time consumption, and the experienced burden of the contact. If consenting, the registered citizens got a questionnaire a.o. of their experience of the contact, and social network.
Results
Approximately 1500 home care contacts were registered. The registration forms and citizen questionnaires were scanned electronically and descriptive and multivariate analyses performed. The data collection is partly still ongoing; hence results are not ready at this point.
Conclusions
At the conference, results will be presented for instance regarding factors related to nurses experiencing burdensome contacts and factors related to citizens’ experiences of the communication with nurses. Research on the nurse frontline in home care may prove valuable in providing new knowledge on the competences and skills needed in a health care system undergoing rapid changes towards more complex and demanding task performance by nurses.
