A review of the transitions between on and off-campus in nursing education

This paper addresses what characterize the challenges for students in nursing education in the transition be-tween on and off campus and how to minimize dropout and increase students´ engagement through the quali-fication of the activities in and across the different settings.
This study is based on a literature review, including thirteen studies. The analysis constituted three main tran-sitions, which showed challenges between on and off-campus: Transition from high school to nursing educa-tion, transition between campus and clinical placement and transition from nursing education to the first occu-pation. In addition, the analysis addressed activities to overcome these challenges.
It is concluded that clinical supervisors and faculty members must give priority to academic and social sup-port to nursing students in the first year. Values in nursing care and the generally dominating gap between campus and clinical placement must be discussed. Moreover, dialogue with health care providers might facili-tate new graduated nurses´ participation in practice.
Based on the findings and a discussion of the potential of the Reflective Practice-based Learning principles, a framework for empirical interventions and further research are revealed.
