N2 - This presentation is based on a qualitative case study entitled Freedom in Leisure (FiL) - a research project on agency, self-determination and well-being in extended education carried out in Denmark during 2022-2023.In Denmark, there is a firm tradition of leisure time pedagogy in SFO’s and youth clubs of various forms. In practice, such settings often value informal activities, relationships, voluntariness and children’s and young people’s own perspectives and requests (Petersen & Sørensen, 2021). However, from a scientific point of view, we do not know much about the pedagogy taking place in such informal after-school settings in Denmark. Up until recently, hardly any researchers found interest in scrutinizing leisure teachers and their role, objectives and priorities in after-school programs (Ringskou & Gravesen, 2020).Currently, with reports of a drastic rise in stress and dissatisfaction among children and young people in Denmark (Katzenelson et al., 2021), this project seeks to investigate the relation between self-determination and well-being, in the supposedly informal learning environment promoted by leisure teachers in SFO’s and youth clubs. The research questions are as follows: How do children and young people experience and understand agency and self-determination in Danish leisure institutions, and how are such aspects related to their experience of well-being? How do leisure teachers focus on children and young people's experiences and understandings of agency and self-determination in their daily work in after-school programs?Theoretically, the project relies on key concepts such as freedom, agency and power (Gert Biesta, 2020; Paulo Friere, 1970) and well-being (Crivello, Camfield & Woodhead, 2008).Methodologically, the case study is based on observational visits, focus group interviews with draw-and-tell techniques and dialogue workshops with children, young people and leisure teachers in three different after-school settings in a large city in Denmark. In the analysis, an abductive process between theory and empirical data will be conducted. In the presentation I will give an overview of the findings related to the research questions, and share new research knowledge on leisure pedagogy practices in Denmark, which is relevant as part of a growing research interest in Nordic leisure time pedagogy.
