Abstract
The number of children and young adults in Denmark receiving a psychiatric diagnosis has risen sharply over recent years, so that by 2020 it will be approx. 15% of all adolescents who have received a psychiatric diagnosis before the age of 18. The diagnosis where the biggest growth has occurred is anxiety, with an increase in diagnosed young people of 83% since 2012. The development is worrying, and from several sides it is speculated whether there is a
link between changes in the educational system, society as a whole and the increased development of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how adolescents with anxiety experience education and how their experiences can be understood in relation to external demands in society. In addition, the view of normality that is reflected in the adolescent’s experiences with education is examined.
The study is hermeneutically inspired and is based on 5 low-structured qualitative interviews with informant’s in the age between 18 and 25 years, who have developed anxiety in connection with education. As a theoretical basis for the analysis is used, Thomas Ziehe's theory of late-modern society, as well as Søren Kierkegaard's texts, especially text’s based on Kierkegaard's understanding of anxiety.
The results of the analysis showed that the informants had a big focus on academic performance and on not making mistakes, which for some of the informants also seemed to dominate their social interaction at the education. Several of the informants link their identities with academic achievements and choices, so that bad performance or wrong choices can be experienced as "loosing something of themselves". The informants feel that the pressure in
connection to their education has caused or intensified their anxiety. The analysis also showed that three of the informants felt that anxiety had a function in terms of getting them to stop up and become more aware of what values they found important in their lives. The three informants feel that the anxiety had made them more aware about themselves, which seems to affect their way of making choices going forward.
In the discussion is discussed the connection between the focus on achievement and the development of the educational system. In particular, the connection between the young people's focus on academic performance and the increased focus on global competition, which is also reflected in the educational system, is discussed, where education has as its main purpose to educate young people to be a resource in the labor market. It is argued that a change in the view of humanity in the educational system, to a greater extent to perceive man as having value through academic skills, could be seen as coherent with young people's
perception that identity is related to academic performance. The result of the thesis is leading to a further discussion on how the general view of humanity in the educational system and in society could appear to influence the young people's perception of what is perceived as normal and how this view may contribute to limiting the young people's actual experience of opportunities for creating one's own identity and thus can lead to the development of anxiety.
