This paper describes the processes involved in developing a loudness algorithm that complements and develops the aesthetic and philosophical perspectives found in the public sound art project The Overheard. This involves a discussion regarding how we perceive loudness paired with an outline of the design process involved in generating awareness about how audio technology can be used to effectively change our ways of perceiving the auditory world. Lastly observations regarding implementation of the loudness algorithm within the Pure Data platform, together with design challenges and future goals are discussed followed by project conclusions.
