Abstract

Studies show that it is difficult to retain newly graduated nurses in the health care
system. The purpose of this study is to investigate how newly graduated nurses experience being enrolled in an introduction programme. Through eight qualitative interviews, we investigate the experiences of newly graduated nurses. The analysis is rooted in a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach inspired by Ricoeur’s theory of narratives and interpretation. The findings show an experience of oscillation, illustrated by three themes: The experience of ‘getting equipped’; the experience of balancing between being thrown into the ‘deep end’ and being protected; and the experience of responsibility in complex nursing. The feeling of pride co-exists with the feeling of responsibility. The study shows that structured support through dialogue, reflection and supervision in groups with other
newly graduated nurses in an introduction programme gives the nurses a sense of security and the opportunity to learn at a customised pace.
