Call of The Wild? Concepts of Nature Represented in Teacher Educaiton

This presentation focuses on the underlying conceptions of nature that are manifesting within TE students work with Education for Sustainable Development. The project outlined in the presentation wishes to explore, first,
which views on nature that TE students tend to reproduce in their work with ESD through fictional approaches and, secondly, using Wolfgang Klafki’s theory of Bildung to distinguish between these various understandings of nature
and their relation to Klafki’s three forms of Bildung; material, formal, categorical. The thesis is that the majority of these understandings are within an anthropocentric/anthropocene framework and moreover reproduce the
spatial and temporal metabolic rifts identified in Kohei Saito’s reading of Marx. While capitalocene conceptions of nature bring important perspectives to ESD in TE it is less evident whether other ecocritical readings in this rapidly
growing field of -centric and-cene discourses are considered. Drawing upon Timothy Morton’s, Ecology without Nature and The Ecological Thought, the project aims to amplify the importance of reflection within the area of
conflict between fiction, conceptions of nature, and Bildung.
