Abstract

Aims: To find out the relationship between Triceps Isometric strength and overhead throwing distance. Background: Although Shoulder strength and its relationship with throwing performance has been studied by various authors, EMG studies have shown also shown significant activity of triceps and anconeus during the acceleration phase of throwing. There is a paucity of available literature examining the relationship between triceps strength and throwing performance.
Material and Methods: Forty eight healthy subjects between the age group of 16-18 from a high school were included in the study. Their isometric triceps strength was measured using strain gauge and the throwing distance was measured using two types of throwing actions (a) standing overhead throw and (b) overhead throw with a forward step.
Results: The relationship between Isometric triceps strength and Standing overhead throw was found to be moderate(r = 0.35).However, the relationship between Isometric Triceps strength and overhead throw with a forward step was found to have a weak correlation between them (r = 0.19).
Conclusion: Although the results of our study do not establish a cause effect relationship, but they do indicate a relationship between Isometric Triceps strength and throwing. Isometric Triceps strength testing and training may have an important role according to our study in improving throwing performance
