Abstract
The Gotlandic picture are among the most frequently used sources of pictures illustrating the Viking Age. It is often attempted to connect the Gotlandic pictorial world with the old Norse literature, but this connection conflicts with both pictures, text and period.
This article accordingly raises an iconographical criticism of some much used motifs from the Gotlandic picture stones. Also the facts that their reading and intepretation is often based upon Norse and Icelandic texts is problemized.
