Abstract
How should one conceptualize the qualitative research interview? Because the interview is embedded in a framework of epistemological, psychological, sociological and political assumptions, the interview is not a useful unit of analysis. Instead, the interview should be characterized theoretically in a model of the function of the interview in relation to a research question. These relations are illustrated with two models - one extracted from Fog (1992) and one from the cultural-historical tradition. Some consequences of these models are discussed.
