Abstract

This study explores dynamics of filter materials, plant composition, root zones, and microbiology within rain gardens, aiming to enhance the efficacy of urban
stormwater runoff treatment. Traditionally focused on hydraulic, maintenance, and aesthetic aspects, there is an increasing demand for robust documentation on
water treatment efficiency to align with emerging environmental regulations. Through laboratory, pilot, and full-scale investigations, we examine the treatment
efficiency of raingardens, revealing insights into possibilities and limitations. The pilot-scale raingardens (1 m ) prove instrumental, offering a practical setting for
efficient media and water sampling at various depths. Our findings demonstrate how continuous 0,2-year rain-events triggers treatment effects for total-P, ortho-P,
total-N, and COD, with microbiological analyses revealing consistent microbial diversities more related with depth than filter media or plants
