Abstract

Research topic and research question In Denmark, the field of extended education has a long history and covers a wide range of institutions such as leisure-time centers, after-school care and different types of leisure clubs and youth clubs. However, it was not until 2014, that a choice-based specialization in the Pedagogue education, covering this specific working field, was established. A specialization that is supposed to function on a strong knowledge base, founded on varied types of knowledge productions concerning extended education. The aim of this research project is to create an overview of the existing research literature on extended education from 1980 up to now. In this presentation, we will focus on key aspects of our findings. With methodological inspiration from the critical review (Grant & Booth, 2009) we will present our tentative critical analysis based on the following distinction; • A majority of the literature is based on research questions related to the interdisciplinary collaboration between pedagogues and regular school teachers • A minority of the literature is based on research questions solely related to the pedagogues and their profession This distinction raises a number of questions, that we wish to critically examine; 1. Given the fact that only a minority of the research addresses question solely directed at the pedagogues and their profession, what does that mean for the knowledge basis underlying the work of the pedagogues? 2. What does a relatively week knowledge basis underlying the work of the pedagogues mean for the autonomy, decision making and practice strategies of the pedagogues? 3. What does the above questions imply for future research on pedagogues working in the field of extended education? Research methodology This research is based on inspiration from Grant & Booth (2009), and their presentation of different forms of reviews. Firstly, we based our efforts on a regular literature review, with the intention to create a mere overview of the literature. In that process we divided the materials into four types of research literature; 1. Peer reviewed research articles, 2. Ph.D. theses, 3. Research reports, 4. Peer reviewed book chapters. Secondly, we moved towards a critical review that goes beyond mere description and includes critical analysis focusing on strengths and gaps in the existing literature. The above distinction and questions derive from this part of the reviewing process. Expected findings Our key concern is to discuss implications of the above-mentioned distinction between the majority of literature related to interdisciplinary collaboration between pedagogues and regular school teachers and the minority of literature solely related to the pedagogues and their profession.
