Abstract
Purpose:
The study aims to explore the experiences of citizens with type 2 diabetes (T2D), engaging in nature-based exercise.
Methods:
Citizens exercising in a T2D rehabilitation program in a Danish municipality were invited to participate in a semi-structured focus-group-interview following nature-based exercise sessions. Thematic analysis was conducted from a phenomenological hermeneutic perspective to identify key perspectives and themes.
Results:
Eight participants were included in the interviews, 5 (62.5%) were men. Age range between 65-79 years. Two overarching themes emerged: 1) Psychological and social benefits of nature-based exercise, and 2) Challenges in sustaining physical activity after the program.
Participants emphasized the mental benefits of nature experiences and the sense of social togetherness, which they perceived both motivating and obligating for participation.
Despite experiencing difficulties maintaining physical activity following the intervention, an increase in everyday life activity was reported, including group walks, recreational sports, and home improvement projects.
Conclusion:
Exercise in the nature offered social and mental benefits, fostering motivation for sustained activity. Participants expressed that outdoor activity support social interaction, suggesting that outdoor programs could effectively support long term physical activity in patients with T2D.
