Abstract

This conference paper presents an ongoing small-scale exploratory empirical study and shows some of the preliminary results and conclusions. This study fundamentally is about students’ engagement with and creation of experimental and multilingual poetry in the subject of German as a foreign language in the Danish primary school.

I will argue that experimental and multilingual poetry can foster not only the acquisition of the target language and cultural learning in the language classroom, but it can also nurture a natural interest in gaining knowledge of other languages and cultures. It can be devoted sensibly to discover and strengthen students’ overall linguistic and intercultural competences as well as their reflective multilingual creativity. Experimental and multilingual poetry can encourage the discovery of useful relations between languages that constitute the students’ linguistic capital, including languages they might have access to at different degrees, as well as languages they dream of learning one day.
