Abstract
Psychotherapy research usually describes how client change is caused by therapist interventions. This article describes how clients change by continuing to use and revising the strategies for change that they bring with them when they first enter therapy. This article presents data from a qualitative diary study of psychotherapy. Three cases describing three different client strategies for change are presented. The interplay between the clients' strategies for change and the therapist's response is analysed. The article describes how a strategy may be rejected, or maintained and redirected. The study suggests that clients' independent strategies for change may be a significant factor with regard to therapeutic processes and outcomes.
