N2 - Sustainable sourcing has been on the purchasing and supply chainmanagement research agenda for more than a decade and is among the mostpopular topics in the field today. Meanwhile, companies have developed arange of methods and tools for managing sustainable sourcing, which hasgrown to be an integrated part of purchasing strategy. Both in practice and inthe sustainable-sourcing literature, we still see examples of these methods notalways having the desired effect. In particular, we see that the most commonmethod of assessment-based sustainability-governance structure withgovernance mechanisms such as codes of conduct, certificates, andmonitoring is used on a large scale, and often results in a lack of suppliersustainability compliance. This Ph.D. dissertation aims to explore and expandknowledge about the causes underlying this lack of supplier compliance. Thefocus is on suppliers’ perception of buying companies’ used assessment-basedmethods and how these affect the supplier–buyer relationship and hence thesuppliers’ ability toward sustainability compliance.
