    Abstract

Historical sociological reflexivity – a new term in the theory of teaching and learning history and social sciences
The article argues that the aims of teaching history and social sciences in primary and secondary schools must be to develop the competence of children and young people to participate in society. On the basis of theories of the reflexive modernization of society it is argued that this participation implies a constant critical awareness of the processes of social change. The article develops the term “historical sociological reflexivity” to emphasize this and criticizes both the theories of historical consciousness and the traditional view that the aim of teaching in history and social sciences is simply for the students to learn and process information about history and society.
