Abstract

Internationalisation is compulsory in the Danish nursing programme. About 3% of the nursing students in the County of Aarhus, Denmark go on exchange to study nursing abroad. In answer to the purpose of increasing the number of exchanges a description of what the students find significant for their decision on an exchange seems relevant.
An ongoing evaluation of exchanges in 3 Nordplus network provided data. 57 evaluation forms from students from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden were collected from 2001 to 2005. The questionnaire focused on two subjects: 1) Decision to travel: “Why do you want to take a part of your clinical practice abroad?” 2) Sources significant to the exchange: “Which of the specified sources have had influence on your decision to travel?” To learn about foreign cultures, professional curiosity, a desire for changes and a future job abroad were the primary reasons for the decision on travel. A previous stay abroad was the primary source significant for the decision to travel. The results indicate further investigation on cultural competence, professional curiosity and characteristics of exchange students in order to motivate students for exchanges during their nursing programme.
