Abstract

Introduction: Europe's population is growing older, with an estimate of almost 10.000 people living with dementia. In Denmark, healthcare services are funded by general taxes and the demographic development may thus pose a particular challenge for the economies of municipalities in rural areas, as they often have a relatively larger share of citizens with dementia. The local community thus plays a significant role in promoting healthy lives for people with dementia in rural areas.
Aim: To explore the perception of a meaningful home/local environment among elderly citizens, including people with dementia, residing in a rural setting.
Methods: A qualitative study, where data was generated at two public citizens meetings, a focus group interview, and a qualitative interview, with a total of 79 participants. The meetings were planned in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Results: The analysis resulted in four categories reflecting essential factors: 1) To be able to take care of oneself, 2) A good home – both physically, mentally, and inside and outside, 3) Meaningful activities and relationships, and 4) Infrastructure, transportation, and shopping
Applied significance: The study underscores both the strengths and challenges faced by rural communities. One notable strength is the pivotal role played by civil society in ensuring a meaningful everyday life for elderly citizens, including people with dementia. Many participants engaged as formal and informal volunteers, making significant contributions to fostering an active local community. However, the participants also expressed a significant challenge: the lack of infrastructure, which negatively impacted people's autonomy, daily activities, and meaningful relationships.
