Abstract

Objectives. For people with advanced cancer societal assistance such as local
authority home help, assistive devices and home modifications can enable them
to live at home despite functional limitations. The aim of this study was to
investigate how much societal assistance people with advanced cancer receive,
and whether there is inequity in terms of age, gender, social status and living
area.
Materials and methods. A cross sectional study included adults with advanced
cancer living at home. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and
structured instruments. The amount of home help, number of assistive devices
and home modifications was described and included in regression analyses as
dependent variables. Independent inequity variables, i.e. age, gender, social status
and living area; and confounding needs variables, i.e. physical functioning, ADL
motor ability, ADL process ability, cohabitation and assistance from family were
entered into the analyses.
Results. In all 164 participants, mean age 67.2 (SD 10.1) years, were included
with nearly equal gender distribution. Eight percent received local authority
home help for personal activities of daily living (ADL) and 11.6% for
instrumental ADL; 62.9% had an assistive device, and 29.6% of the homes were
modified. The regression analyses showed that the needs factor ADL motor
ability predicted getting home help and having an assistive device. Predictors for
having the home modified were the needs factors low physical functioning, low
ADL motor ability, living alone, while the needs factor not getting assistance
from family predicted not having the home modified.Conclusion. A minority got local authority home help, while more than half had
assistive devices and about a third home modifications. The provided assistance
was mostly needs based with the level of ADL motor ability as the main
predictor. In contrast to previous stud
