N2 - As unemployment is harmful both to the persons involved and to society at large, the public sector tries to combat unemployment by different ways of intervention. Traditionally, this has been in the form of labour market policies, but now it is in the form of activation. This is a modern way of trying to bring unemployed people quickly back into the labour market, placing more responsibility on workless people. And activation has also become an object of research of its own. How this happened is seen in both a historical and a systematic way, and including the newest developments after Covid-19. Next, elements in activation programmes are discussed. Finally, the contributions in the book are introduced, in which ways of tracing and highlighting national developments and problems are to be found. This brings actors and administrative systems into the analysis as well.
