Abstract

The thesis takes its starting point in the Danish integration initiatives in the psychiatric field. It questions, why we still live in a society, in which mental disorders are viewed as a marginal category, in spite of the many good intensions concerning de-instistutionalization and decentralization. The conception of marginalization is discussed as a process, which does not consist of absolute positions, but as a process containing a possibility for change.

The thesis mainly has a hermeneutical tradition and interpretation is its aim. The purpose af the thesis is to try to point out the possibilities for different communities' possibilities of changing the marginalization process and thereby insure a more socially equal participation. In the thesis the perspective of marginalization is viewed as culturally determined as opposed to being determined by a construction of opinion. The formation of opinion is attributed importance from a devison og binary opposites and from establishing cultural categories as opposed to a concept of pure and impure and cultural defilement. The cultural oppinion formation gets a further importance for the formation of identity, both in connection to an individual and collective formation of identity. The formation of identity is illuminated from general human circumstances, which influence the formation, and from particular difficulties existing for people in the marginalized category. The social consequences of a cultural marginalization manifests itself in social control.
Because the thesis takes its starting point in different, specific communities, the thesis contains an account and a discussion of the main characteristics og communities and their possibilities of framing a collective negotiation.
The emperial material is based on participant observation and a discourseanalytical approach to five different communities. The common factor for the communities is the fact, that they stand out as seminal communities for people with mental dsisorders.
The communities are analyzed from both a vertical dimension, to find the specific characteristics, and from a horizontal dimension, to search for possible insigths, which can be generalized and function as inspiration for the social offers. The thesis attempts to show the marginalized group's own understanding of how to achieve a larger social participation. The result of the analysis points to the fact, that at least five general subjects can be identified: an attention on marginalization, a focus on general human aspects, an opening of the communities to welcome other categories of people, a focus on information and establishment of the individual responsibility.
