Background:

Awareness of cynicism and infringing behavior by social welfare workers in Denmark has increased in recent years. An indicator of the problem can be seen in the increased number of citizen advisors in Danish municipalities which has more than doubled during 2011 (n: 16) to 2021 (n: 36). Citizen advisors handle citizen complaints with municipalities' case processing or personal service. No previous studies have attempted to systematically uncover the phenomenon in a Danish context.

Aim:

To uncover the prevalence and expression of cynicism within social work and to identify useful methods and strategies to help prevent the phenomenon in practice and in social work. education.

Method:

The study builds on a participatory research design including citizen advisors (40%) identifying and mapping cases of cynicism in their consultations during a 3-month period. The mapping will provide information on different characteristics of cynicism, identified based on a systematic literature review and case examples provided by the citizen advisors. SPSS.27 will be used to compute quantitative results, and systematic text condensation will be used to analyse qualitative results.

Findings:

A definition of ‘cynicism in social work’ has been made and include 6 categories of feeling unjustly treated by the municipality in a case processing or personal service. Preliminary results reveal a significant number of citizens who experience a cynical or infringing behavior in the proceedings of their case.

Conclusion:

Considering the preliminary findings, we expect to gain evidence that the phenomenon is highly prevalent in social work and call for further action.
