Abstract

Addressing profound development and transformation of food safety culture requires new processes and practical approaches. The study used therapeutic training of sensory and emotional skills and action research to explore underlying mechanisms and change processes in a group of voluntary employees at the Department of Food Safety and Veterinary Issues in Danish Agriculture and Food Council. The study showed that working intensely and therapeutically on an individual and group level can have a significant impact on the surrounding culture and social capital. Five underlying change mechanisms were revealed linking individual change processes and changes to the social capital and culture in the department. Based on the underlying mechanisms a collective ”Change Agent Model” was developed. The model reveals general psychological dynamic processes that any individual or group can work with to
become drivers for cultural change. The insights from this study are relevant for a general change of food safety and illustrates methods to train change agents capable of managing and developing the food safety and organizational culture. The findings are also relevant in connection with other types of cultural developments.
