Abstract
Introduction
This article presents a selection of observations originating from a series of five recently completed Danish pilot projects within Early Childhood Education and Care. The projects were funded by the Danish Ministry for Children, Education and Gender Equality and based on an idea developed in cooperation with the Danish Union of Early Childhood and Youth Educators.
The five projects may be considered a mutual action with a joint aim to focus on gender in ECEC in other words to promote more diversity amongst the staff. The individual projects were thus obliged to seek and demonstrate new effective ways to attract, recruit and retain (more) male pedagogues to ECEC.
In contrast to classical research, the projects and the activities within were described by the practitioners themselves. They would be responsible and they made the observations in the pedagogical institutions and thus every doing was rooted in an everyday life and practice with ECEC.
The projects were carried out from January 2014 until June 2015 and took place in a wide range of day-care facilities in five municipalities. The projects were met with specific requirements including promotion of greater diversity in staff by e.g. attracting and retaining (more) male pedagogues (Wohlgemuth, 2015b).
A request to recruit (more) male pedagogues to ECEC should be realized in connection with certain perspectives; first and foremost the European and Danish policy objectives of breaking down a gender-segregated labour market. Secondly; the share of male students in the Danish BA study programme Social Education aiming at future careers within e.g. ECEC, gives reasons to believe the very few men in ECEC, may enlarge (Table 1). And finally; men’s reasons for choosing the BA study programme indicates an enlargement to be possible (Wohlgemuth, 2010).
Upon request from the Ministry the observations and conclusions made by the projects are collected and organized into an inspirational hands-on guide-book (Hviid and Wohlgemuth, work in progress).
