Ramadan og diabetes i et sygeplejeperspektiv

Publikation: Bidrag til tidsskriftTidsskriftsartikelFormidling

Abstract

Muslims with diabetes do not always take the advice of health professionals into their decision to fast during Ramadan. The purpose here is therefore to gain insights of how nurses can involve the individual’s own life, own resources and own opportunities in such a way that the person can fast as safely as possible. This knowledge can supplement the existing guidelines to Muslims concerning fasting. Four issues are outlined. Firstly, a basic understanding of the Muslim fast can make it easier for nurses in general to guide and advise Muslims with diabetes. Secondly, diabetes nurses must take the initiative to talk to Muslims with diabetes before Ramadan. Thirdly, counselling must not unilaterally focus on the nega-tive and medical challenges of fasting with diabetes. Fourthly, an even closer collaboration must be established between Islamic organizations/imams, health professionals and the individual Muslim and his or her family and network
