Reflective and Innovative Learning Designs Inspired by Gaming Principles

Abstract

The use of gamification in Higher Education is challenged by the fact that a large proportion of the concepts developed for educational purposes do not adequately support reflection, exploration, and innovation. A particular focus will be a discussion of the traditional vision behind game design as a predefined "Exemplary Process" against the desire for reflective and interdisciplinary teaching practice. The article will present a model for how gamification through the inspiration of game-principle known from “Massive Multi Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG)” can inspire the design of new teaching concepts and representations of the academic.
