Abstract

Introduction: As dementia prevalence rises globally, more people experience symptoms while still employed. However, fear of stigma and job loss often forces them into premature retirement. Research suggests that engaging in brain-stimulating activities like work tasks may reduce cognitive decline and slow disease progression. Continued employment not only benefits individual´s well-being but also supports economic productivity and reduces healthcare costs. Despite this, vocational rehabilitation for people with dementia remains underdeveloped, and knowledge is limited on how to best support work retention from various perspectives, including those of workers and employers.
Aim: This study aimed to identify key initiatives to support people with dementia regain or maintain employment, drawing on insights from people with dementia and relevant stakeholders.
Methods: As part of the Danish research project Meaningful And Dignified Employment for People with Dementia (MADE), this qualitative study explored employment support needs through two World Café Workshops. Participants included 18 individuals: people with dementia, relatives, employers, job consultants, and dementia specialists. Thematic analysis revealed three core themes: 1) Challenging stigma, 2) Promoting workplace inclusion, and 3) Rethinking vocational rehabilitation.
Findings: The study underscores the need for a paradigm shift in workplace support for people with dementia. Participants emphasized the importance of inclusive employment practices, structural changes, and a reconsideration of vocational rehabilitation. The findings point to the complexity of retaining employment and the need for flexible, individualized support models.
Implications: Inclusive employment requires addressing systemic barriers, reducing stigma, and fostering open dialogue. A shift from deficit-focused to integration-focused strategies is essential. These insights can guide workplaces, rehabilitation programs, and policy efforts toward enabling people with dementia to stay active and included in the workforce.
