Abstract
Purpose. This article utilizes the metaphor of shadow organizing to explore research practices and the enactment of data. It points to the enactment of data that happens “betwixt and between” canonical research practices: no-longer data. It asks the fundamental question of how to go on enacting research practices in the production of data and knowledge.
Design/methodology/approach. To discuss how to go on enacting research practices to produce data, a research project undertaken by the authors is described. The research process was interrupted because interviewees withdrew their consent to use the interview data. Taking its point of departure in the post-epistemological lens of practice theory, in this article, the concepts of shadow organizing and not-yet data are employed to understand the enactment of research practices as they unfolded in the research project.
Findings. The article develops the concept of not-yet data to become attentive to the complex process of the looping of not-yet data, data, and no-longer data. The attentiveness brought about enables the researchers to reflect on the normativities involved in the enactment of research practices and the production of new knowledge.
Originality. By introducing the concept of no-longer data and describing the complex enactment of research as a process of the looping of not-yet data, data, and no-longer data, the article shows how new knowledge is produced in shadow organizing. However, it also questions whether this new apocryphal knowledge can in fact be legitimized in prevailing research practices. So, what are the last data standing?
