Abstract
Title: Sociolinguistic situation in Denmark – linguistic variation in a seemingly homogenous language society
Traditionally, the Danish speech society is described as heavily homogenized following a century long process of dialect levelling. But has all dialectal variation really disappeared? And how should contemporary Danish language change be considered from a linguistic point of view?
This presentation initially walks through the process of linguistic homogenization from centralization of the nation state through urbanization and to arrival of national media. Then for the main part, newer perspectives on dialect use are presented along with studies of linguistic variation in multilingual urban areas as well as developing variation in online written communication.
Throughout the presentation, examples of Danish sociolinguistic studies are presented. A special focus is laid on conversation analytical (CA) studies and the way this method have contributed to describing sociolinguistic perspectives on language variation.
