Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate selected generative mechanisms that could influence the level of user involvement in a social psychiatric residence. This is done through a critical realistic perspective. The users in this study are adults with both a psychiatric diagnosis and a substance abuse.
The empirical data is obtained through six semi-structured interviews with the employees. After analysing the empirical data and including the theoretical focus, four possible analytical themes appeared: Manager in own life, the user's possibility for influence, the relationship with the user and finally the negotiating, controlling employee. Throughout the analysis and discussion, we involved relevant theory and research-based literature and concluded that generative mechanisms such as micro power, relationship between the user and the employee, different personal and professional opinions and specific issues related to this particularly user group could affect the level of user involvement.
