Sundhedskompetence i hverdagslivet: Et agential realistisk perspektiv på sundhedskompetence

Despite a welfare system that should ensure equal access to health and education for all citizens, Denmark has a socially unequal occurrence of health risks and illnesses. A low socioeconomic status means a high risk of illness and vice versa. These social health inequities span across the entire population. It is demonstrated that there is a large difference in the health-related behavior of the pupils in youth education. Vocational school students have a significantly unhealthier behavior than high school students.
Health literacy is a relatively new concept in public health science. Health literacy is linked to literacy and entails people’s knowledge, motivation and competences to access, understand, appraise, and apply health information in order to make judgments and take decisions in everyday life concerning healthcare, disease prevention and health promotion to maintain or improve quality of life during the life course.
The World Health Organization believes that the concept of health competence will be a decisive factor in reducing social inequalities in health. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the phenomenon. So far, research has been done on health literacy in treatment regimes, which leaves health literacy in health promotion regimes is relatively unexplored.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how everyday life limits or enables health literacy for students at a Danish vocational school. The problem definition is: How does everyday life limit or enable health promoting health literacy, for students at a vocational school? This will be explored in an agential realistic perspective, as offered by Karen Barad. Using participatory observations and interviews with students and teachers, the analysis identifies agential intra-acting modalities, that enact the student’s everyday life.
The results show, that everyday life predominantly limits the student's health literacy, which leads to the conclusion, that to be successful in a health promoting intervention with these students, it requires an in-depth understanding of the modes of constitution of their everyday lives. The agential realistic perspective offers an understanding of the situation as a dynamic whole, where it must be modified from several different positions to intervene effectively.
