Abstract

The aim of the paper is to reach a better understanding of which governance structures are
applied in the exchanges between buying companies and suppliers in the Textile and Apparel
Industry in order to ensure supplier sustainability compliance. Furthermore, an additional aim is
to analyze suppliers’ perception of and reaction to these different governance structures. The
analysis is based on 30 supplier interviews conducted in India, Bangladesh and China. The results
of the analysis will lead to a better understanding of why, taking into account the governance
structures used, suppliers find it difficult to meet and comply with the buying companies’
demands for sustainability and might behave in a legitimate opportunistic way.
