Abstract

The third chapter in this collection, by Morten Korsgaard, VIA University,
engages with Hannah Arendt in addressing the question of exemplarity and tact:
Examples are the focus of this chapter, and they also play an indispensable part
in the unfolding of Korsgaard’s argument. He makes the case that these examples
are the principle means by which tact becomes a part of pedagogical practice.
Korsgaard sees Arendt’s notion of natality—discussed in this book’s introduction—as indispensable to contemporary definitions of education and pedagogy.
However, in a bold gambit, he also takes Arendt’s notion of the daimon—the
way one is seen by others, one’s public aspect—as significant for tact.
