Abstract
Background: Each year, 25.000 Danes suffer concussions, leading to prolonged symptoms that affect daily activities, including work. Research suggests that individuals with higher education levels may face greater difficulty returning to work, possibly due to work environment factors. This study’s aim was to investigate how work environment and education influence return-to-work outcomes after concussion, contributing to occupational therapy practices in vocational rehabilitation.
Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study includes 91 participants who sustained concussions within the past three years. Data were collected via an online survey, and statistical analysis was conducted to identify correlations between education, work environment factors, and return-to-work outcomes.
Results: No statistically significant correlation (p = 0.23) was found between educational level and return to work. However, descriptive statistics show that individuals with higher educational levels tend to return to work more frequently. These individuals also report receiving more support from colleagues and managers and have greater opportunities for adjustments in the work environment. A small proportion of participants were aware of assistive devices or environmental adaptations that could aid in their return to work.
Conclusion: While no direct correlation between educational level and return to work was found, the work environment, particularly managerial support and flexibility, plays a key role in successful return-to-work outcomes. This study supports the inclusion of environmental adjustments and assistive devices in vocational rehabilitation for individuals with prolonged post-concussion symptoms, highlighting the occupational therapist's role in shaping work environments to support recovery and improve return-to-work outcomes.
